STEM events for youngsters
Morrison’s Academy is hosting a STEM event for young people from across the region next week.
Aimed at school pupils aged from 1014 years old and their families, the free event at the Crieff independent school takes place from 10am until 2.30pm on Saturday, March 18, and will include a series of workshops and a careers fair. There will also be prizes up for grabs.
Around 20 interactive workshops will run during the day, led by leading figures from the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics – known collectively as ‘STEM’ – and Morrison’s Academy teachers.
Workshops include: ‘Experience the Real World in Virtual Reality’ by Avantis Education; ‘Harry Potter Forensics’ by the Morrison’s Academy chemistry and biology departments; ‘ Lights, Camera, Steam’ by See, Hear, Discover; ‘ Robotics and Engineering’ by the Royal Navy; ‘Prosthetics, Orthotics and Surgical Bone Graft to Help Civilian Landmine Survivors and Beyond’ by Professor Reid of Strathclyde University, and ‘Make Raisins Dance’ by the Morrison’s Academy home economics department.
A mix of local businesses and national organisations will also be on hand at the careers fair to raise awareness of the myriad of pathways into various sectors, including Police Scotland, SSEN, Falcon Food Service Equipment Ltd, Infinity Blu Dental, Seric Systems, FemEng, Merlin ERD, One Stop, Scot JCB Limited, Arnold Clark, the University of the Highlands and Islands, and many more.
Speakers are lined up to open and close the event, including Kirsty Kakanskas from GSK, who will share the story of her journey into STEM and talk about her experiences of the sector as a young woman.
The school’s onsite cafe, the Coffee Lab, will be open during the event.
There will also be indoor areas allocated to eat a packed lunch.
