Choristers hit right note for care home audience

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

Talented members of Crieff Choral Group were in fine voice during an uplifting performance at a local care home.

Some of the town’s choristers entertained residents at Balhousie Dalnaglar Care Home in Crieff on Thursday last week.

The residents were said to be delighted to hear a selection of music which included traditional Scottish songs and well- known hymns.

Special favourites that those gathered sang along to included the ‘ Lewis Bridal Song’ (‘ Mairi’s Wedding’), ‘Westering Home’, ‘Our Eyes Have Seen the Glory’ and ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’.

In addition, tenor Ian Rogers performed a solo ‘Mary of Argyll’, Mary McGillivray recited RL Stevenson’s ‘ The Lamp Lighter’, bass singer Iain Low sang a solo in ‘My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean’ and choir member Rosie Series accompanied the choir beautifully on the keyboard.

Julie Davies is an activities coordinator at the Comrie Road home.

She said: “The residents so enjoyed hearing the singing and almost everybody joined in.

“There were smiles all around the room as happy memories were recalled.

“One resident, David, even stood and joined the choir for the encore of ‘ Ye Banks and Ye Braes’.

“It was such a lovely afternoon for everyone.”

Crieff Choral Group’s next performance is from 7.30pm on Saturday, March 25, at Strathearn Arts in Crieff’s Comrie Street.

The music planned for the evening, called ‘ From the Old World to the New World’, has been described by organisers as “a celebration of the influence that music from Native American songs and Spirituals had on both European and American composers”, which includes the likes of Antonin Dvorak, Amy Beach, Aaron Copland and Michael Tippett.

Tickets are available in advance from the Strathearn Arts box office.
