Weather hits rollout of new recycling bins

- KATHRYN ANDERSON

Recent bad weather has affected the delivery of new grey-lidded recycling bins to Perth and Kinross neighbourhoods.

Perth and Kinross Council’s new recycling service began on Monday, October 30.

A senior councillor has said all properties which have not yet received their new fourth bin should have them by November 7.

The new bin has been rolled out using funding from the Scottish Government’s Recycling Improvement Fund. It is hoped the additional service will increase recycling rates and save Perth and Kinross Council money.

As of last week, the current blue-lidded bin has been separated into a twin-stream service. The blue-lidded bin is now for paper and cardboard and the grey-lidded bin is for plastic – including soft plastics – cans, tins and foil.

However the rollout has been delayed in some areas due to the recent storms.

Perth and Kinross Council’s environment, infrastructure and economic development committee was updated on Wednesday, November 1.

The committee’s convener, Depute Provost Andrew Parrott, said: “There have been concerns expressed about the impact of recent bad weather on the rollout of the programme. To date, 93 per cent of the two-wheeled domestic bins have been delivered, 100 per cent of the fourwheeled communal bins and 79 per cent of commercial bins have been delivered.

“The delivery programme is continuing and will hopefully be complete by Tuesday, November 7.”

He said the weather had “not impacted” the rollout of information via social media and most of the 75,000 information packs had been sent out by post or were currently being processed for delivery.

The SNP Perth City Centre councillor said: “60,000 of the planned information packs have already been delivered, 15,000 are in the process of delivery - the last batch of 15,000 covering Letham, Craigie and the western edge of Perth.

“We appreciate there may have been some frustration with this but the service will work with customers/clients to allow time for the grey bin to be brought into use during November.

“The areas which have not yet had the deliveries are mainly in areas such as Crieff, Blackford, West Strathallan, Gilmerton, Madderty, St David’s, Logiealmond, Tullybelton, Rait, Kilspindie, Kinfauns, rural Auchterarder, Forgandenny and Powmill.”
