If Tony Stark built tablets instead of mechanised suits, he’d struggle to come up with anything better than Apple’s new ipad. This is a device that’s deserving of that ‘Pro’ moniker, and when IOS 11 rolls out later this year it could be the only computer you’ll need.

1 Model looks

This new ipad Pro doesn’t stray far from the iconic looks of its predecessors, but following a visit from the anti-bezel brigade this model crams in a 20% bigger screen without massively expanding the dimensions. So it’s slightly bigger than the outgoing model and is about 30g heavier, but you’ll hardly notice the increase when you pick it up. It’s still incredibly lightweight.

2 How refreshing

As ever, the Pro’s screen is its real star, and this 120Hz panel is sure to be a hit among Apple’s creative fans. Basically, this upgrade means your ipad can refresh each pixel at twice the speed of a regular tablet, lowering the input latency to 20 milliseconds. The result? A super-smooth and responsive feel that’s perfect for when you’re using Apple Pencil.

3 Smooth operator

With a modified version of the iphone 7 processor, calling the ipad Pro fast isn’t doing it justice. Even the most demanding games are no match for its A10X chip, with silky-smooth frame rates no matter what you’re playing. Even though its 10 hours of battery life is shorter than the Surface’s, that still leaves you with plenty of time for an energy-drink-fuelled gaming session.

4 Key skills

Hook up your Pro to Apple’s Smart Keyboard and you’ll be able to work just about anywhere. Not only does it also unfurl elegantly into a kickstand, but the larger version has full-size keys that feel much closer to typing on a desktop keyboard. Combine that with Affinity Photo and the Apple Pencil, and this hybrid can almost match the Surface Pro for editing.
