BUDGET BANGERS
Why spend big on a deck when you can splash that cash on your record collection instead? Here are your bargain options…
SONY PS-HX500
£249 / sony.co.uk To some people, Sony’s PS-HX500 is the physical embodiment of what it felt like when Dylan went electric. A turntable that’s capable of ripping vinyl into hi-res audio files, it’s an affront to the obstinate LP’S steadfast refusal to leave the confines of your home unless it’s wrapped up in cotton wool and carried around in a flight case plastered with ‘fragile’ stickers.
Of course, we’re exaggerating a little here. Turntables that can magic up mp3s of your record collection have been around for some time now; but this Sony is a little different. Not only is it a thoroughly affordable proposition – it’s also a fine record player that performs above its station and the ideal choice for anyone looking to treat their vinyl right without breaking the bank.
Rip roaring
Lay down an LP and you’ll be treated to plenty of detail, clarity and texture. With a huge, open sound, the PS-HX500 lends itself towards epic rock bombast. Its flaws come a little closer into focus when it’s not blasting out Bohemian Rhapsody, but low-key fare is still admirably presented. Whatever you end up recording, it will be worth listening back to, and getting the job done is as easy as hooking it up to your laptop via USB, downloading the free software and clicking a button. Even your Luddite parents can’t get that wrong.
Pricier record players will, unsurprisingly, sound better; but for sheer versatility this Sony does not disappoint. And it makes a great stepping stone for jumping onto the vinyl bandwagon.
