Pencil & ruler 5mm thick foamboard Scalpel & cutting mat Rust-oleum white surface primer spray, £9.49, Homebase Rust-oleum Bright Copper metallic spray paint, £9.49, Homebase Marble-effect selfadhesive vinyl, £5.13, Amazon

Draw a circle 2cm bigger than your dinner plate onto the foamboard and cut this out using a scalpel and cutting mat. Working outside on a dustsheet, spray the top and sides with primer and leave to dry. Apply a coat of the copper paint and leave to dry. Cut a square of vinyl big enough to cover the circle. Lay the copper circle face up and slowly stick the vinyl to the surface, gently peeling off the backing paper as you go and smoothing out any air bubbles. Cover the whole surface then flip it over and trim away the excess. Cut 1cm into the marble on the front and follow this around to leave a copper edge.
