Paintbrush & pencil 20 x 20cm stretched canvas, £2.50, hobbycraft acrylic paints in your colour choice, from £2, hobbycraft Pack of assorted buttons (colours and sizes to suit your chosen project), from £3 for 250g, Docrafts UHU glue, £3, hobbycraft coloured twine or ribbon, if needed for your design

1Use a pencil to roughly mark out your design on the canvas if necessary (we did this for the tree and heart designs). Paint the background colour using acrylic paints or leave blank. lay out the buttons on a flat surface and pick the colours and sizes you’ll need to create your chosen design. Play around with the composition until you’re happy with how it looks.

2Using a small dot of UHU glue on the back of each button, stick each one in place and hold for a few seconds to secure. Continue this process, adding buttons to your canvas and building up the design. Overlap buttons to create even more impact and fix ribbon or twine for extra detail.

thi s versatile technique means you can create artwork for any room in your house – the balloon design is perfect for a nursery
