With the correct lighting, your room can take on different looks throughout the day, night and through the seasons. In most spaces, you’ll likely need several types of lighting, as one central source won’t do every job you require. This can be easily achieved through light layering, where you make use of different types of light sources in each room, depending on your needs.
The three layers of light
A pendant in a living room is no longer sufficient as the only light source. Add ambience with a floor lamp that you switch on in the early evening, with a desk lamp providing directional light that’s suitable for reading in a comfy armchair. Don’t overlook wall lights – downlighters have become very popular, with an array of different styles, and are perfect for adding interest and ambience to a focal wall.
As you put together your plan, featuring ambient (main), accent and task lighting, think of how to balance the three elements for a cohesive overall look. This is especially important in functional areas like kitchens, where you need various light types for different tasks and moods, but it’s equally important to build the layers in reception rooms, bathrooms and bedrooms.
