1 Plaster the alcove’s surface if necessary so it’s flat, and paint it dark so that the logs stand out. 2 Saw the logs into shallow circles and lightly sand the edges. Choose logs of different sizes with a variety of grains. 3 Use a strong multi-surface glue to stick the circles into the fireplace, starting at the bottom. 4 Once the glue has dried, paint pale accent colours on random circles to tie in with the room.
