Create a warm welcome at your front door – Sammy Shiers of Hobbycraft shows you how

-

Bring a natural look to your front door this festive season by teaming lush fern fronds with slices of dried fruit and seedpods to create a beautiful rustic wreath. It’s a pared-back alternative to the usual glittery designs, bringing a sophisticated feel to your decor.

YOU WILL NEED

Rattan grapevine wreath Fern fronds Oasis floral wire Dried fruit slices Dried seedpods Secateurs

Scissors Hot-glue gun Red ribbon

1 FORAGE FOR FERNS

Gather a selection of real or artificial fern fronds. If real, shake off any bugs.

2 A DD FOLIAGE

Place a cluster of fern leaves on top of a section of the rattan wreath, then wind a length of florist’s wire around the stems to secure. Overlap another spray of leaves on top and secure with wire.

3 FILL OUT THE WREATH

Repeat until the rattan is covered. Tease out leaves to make the wreath look bushy. If real, mist with water.

4 PREPARE THE FRUITSLICES

Group two or three dried orange or apple slices together, overlapping them so that you see the segments of each one. Pierce the base of each slice, using a length of florist’s wire. Pull each end down and twist the wires together.

5 DECORATE THE WREATH

To attach the fruit decorations, push the long stems of wire through the foliage and loop back through. Cut away the excess, then hide the tails.

6 GLUE ON SEEDPODS

Use a glue gun to attach seedpods, positioning them to cover up any gaps.

7 F INISH WITH A RIBBON

Decide which way up you want your wreath to hang, then thread a ribbon through the centre and tie at the top.
