The 20-year-old winger’s rise to fame has captured the imaginatio­n of football followers Stateside but his mega-money move comes as no surprise to the man who started him on the road to stardom.

Steve Klein, coach at local junior club Pennsylvan­ia Classics, knew when Pulisic was only six that he had the desire to succeed.

Klein recalls: “I don’t know if you’d say he was introverte­d but when he first came here aged six he was a bit on the quiet side.

“He was more about being focused. Even at a young age he was focused on wanting to make it as a soccer player, which is unusual for a kid. But once you because I’m a Liverpool lad and a Liverpool fan but I know the rest of the players want to win things as much as I do.

“I’m sure the manager will look to put a strong team out to give us the best chance of going through.

“We want to win every competitio­n. That’s how big clubs think.”

The Premier League remains Liverpool’s holy grail. Twelve months ago the Reds inflicted City’s first defeat of the season in a 4-3 thriller at Anfield.

And Alexander-Arnold added: “They responded by going on another long run of winning games. That’s what the top teams do and it’s what we’ve got to do. We don’t let one defeat ruin our season.”
