Oil’s well with the world of nutrients
IT’S ONE of those things we hear is good for us yet we grimace at the very name – cod liver oil. There’s no doubt it has its benefits despite it being the butt of jokes in children’s comics – and many people have been taking it for as long as they can remember, despite the strong fishy aftertaste.
Yet for everyone who has made it part of their life, there are many more who turn their backs after a single spoonful.
Now, however, there’s a way to get the goodness of fish oil that’s to everyone’s taste.
Cod liver oil contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which cannot be produced by the body but which are known to boost the brain, protect heart health and support vision.
It is also commonly taken by people experiencing joint problems.
Scientists, however, are now aware of better sources for this vital nutrient.
Krill oil (from those tiny creatures that populate the oceans) is recognised by researchers as the best source of omega-3 and has become a major part of the health market in the United States.
Unlike fish oil it naturally combines the omega-3 with phospholipids.
The body recognises phospholipids as part of its own cell membrane and readily incorporates the whole complex, meaning that more beneficial ingredients are absorbed. This new variant of omega-3 supplement also contains choline, a vital neurotransmitter that is also important for healthy liver function, and contains fewer impurities than cod liver oil because krill are further down the food chain.
The Cambridge diet supplement leader FutureYou has created OMEGA 3+, one of the most concentrated omega-3 supplements there is. OMEGA 3+ has been getting plenty of attention from organisations for whom on health and performance is vital, from the US military to sports scientists who conduct research on professional athletes.
THE super-supplement goes through a purification process that removes the strong fishy flavour as well as salts, leaving a higher concentration of vital omega-3 and phospholipids. OMEGA 3+ comes in easy-to-swallow capsules, making it an excellent alternative for those who struggle to take old-fashioned cod liver oil supplements.
In a FutureYou trial, five people – all of whom had a balanced diet and considered themselves ‘foodies’ – took a blood test to discover their own omega-3 levels and found it was significantly lower than recommended in every case. Yet after eight weeks of taking the supplement, there was an average improvement of 33.2 per cent in their blood omega-3 levels.
FutureYou chief executive, Adam Cleevely, himself part of the trial, continued to take the supplement for a year – after which his omega-3 levels put him in the top five per cent of his age group. We all know that fish is good for us – and OMEGA 3+ captures that goodness in a simple daily supplement…
