Gillingham 1 Cardiff 0 Tom Hopkinson
GILLINGHAM midfielder Elliott List fired the goal that dumped Premier League Cardiff out of the Cup and then roared: Now bring on Manchester City!
The Gills star, 21, wrapped his right boot around a loose ball just inside the box nine minutes from the end. And despite referee Tim Robinson playing seven minutes of stoppage time, the League One strugglers held on.
List said: “I want Manchester City now. Why? Because they’re the best team in the Premier League.”
Boss Steve Lovell added: “Elliott took his goal really well. He’s a great young player, a great prospect. I’m really pleased for him because he kept going throughout.
“I haven’t played against a Premier League team before so this has to be the best result of my career. To get through this one is lovely. It’s nice to be in the hat and we’ll wait to see who we get.”
Elsewhere, Premier League Huddersfield went down 1-0 at
Bristol City to a second-half Josh Brownhill goal, while League Two Grimsby Town held on until four minutes from time at top division side Crystal Palace after playing with 10 men from the second minute when full-back Andrew
Fox was sent off. A late goal from Jordan Ayew finally broke their hearts. Manchester United eased through 2-0 against Championship side Reading with goals from Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku.
Burnley, who hadn’t had a penalty in the league for two years, finally got one in the 90th minute against Barnsley. Chris Wood converted for a 1-0 win. Struggling Bolton beat Walsall 5-2 with a Josh Magennis hat-trick and Middlesbrough also went goal crazy, with a 5-0 hammering of League
One Peterborough. Accrington continued Ipswich’s season of torment by beating them 1-0 through Billy Kee’s second-half goal.
