How my hero grandad helped rescue Prince, by Queenie aged nine

- By Berny Torre

A MOTORIST who helped Prince Philip out of his crashed Land Rover has been hailed a hero by his granddaughter – who is named Queenie.

Nine-year-old Queenie Powell couldn’t believe it when she found out her grandfather Glen Watson, 58, had helped pull the Prince out of his upturned car near the Sandringham estate.

She said: “My nanny texted me saying grandad had helped Prince Philip.

“I ran downstairs saying, ‘Mum, Mum!’ and showed her the text.

“He is kind, funny and caring and he is a hero in my eyes.”

Mr Watson, a sales rep from Norwich, said he came across “chaotic” scenes when he pulled up on the A149 on Thursday afternoon.

“I didn’t realise who it was to begin with. Once I looked inside the car I could see he wasn’t seriously hurt. He was shaking and just said, ‘Get me out’.

“His leg was stuck under the steering wheel, two police officers turned up and we got him out.”

He added: “I travel a lot and see a lot of accidents. When I saw this one I thought, ‘This is quite a bad one’, I stopped straight away and helped.

“To be fair to Prince Philip, for a man of his age to be able to walk after that, he is a tough man. I’m amazed everyone walked away unscathed.

“The police were there straight away, there were cars and ambulances everywhere.

“Prince Philip was on his feet and police made a ring around him and ushered people away.”

Mr Watson left shortly after the emergency services arrived having spent about 15 minutes at the roadside.

“It’s been quite a weird day really,” he told his family that night.
