Arsenal seek Overmars to solve transfer trouble

- By Simon Mullock

MARSENAL are ready to make a move for former winger Marc Overmars to become their technical director.

The Gunners’ transfer strategy has been deemed not fit for purpose by the club, with manager Unai Emery and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat unable to form a working relationship. Now the

He has gone from Southampton to Tottenham for starters, while his stock and standing have risen to a completely different level.

Then there is the technology at a coach’s disposal, the scouting teams behind the scenes and the obscene amounts of money required merely to survive – let alone thrive

– at elite level.

But amid all those significant developments one thing has proved constant.

According to Poch, the need to be a top man-manager is essential if you want to be a crack boss.

It was that way before he assumed the reins at St Mary’s. It is that way now as he sits in the Spurs hot seat and it will still be that way wherever he is in the future.

For without those skills, the former Espanyol coach claims handling a group of players and getting the very best out of them would be impossible. And he pointed London club want Overmars (left) to solve a problem that also hamstrung his former boss Arsene Wenger in his final years at the Emirates.

Overmars, 45, has worked as Ajax’s director of football for almost seven years. He has been responsible for the development of brilliant young Dutch talents like Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Justin Kluivert as well as the recruitment of current Premier League stars Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez.

But Ajax are now viewed as a selling club throughout Europe. Although they will meet Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, they haven’t won a trophy for four years.

And Arsenal believe the Dutchman can solve the recruitment problems that have plagued the club for years.

Emery continues to insist that his relationship with Mislintat is “normal”.
