Pete’s Wild after penalty blow

Wild was furious after their FA Cup giant-killing run was ended by a controversial 90th-minute penalty.

Wild was angry with referee Peter Bankes’ decision to award a spot-kick for handball against Peter Clarke on the advice of one of his assistants.

Ben Whiteman converted the penalty for his second of the game to send Doncaster Rovers through to the Fifth Round for the first time since 1956.

“I’ve seen it back and it’s not a penalty,” fumed Wild, whose side beat Fulham in the last round. “It’s as clear as day, it’s not a penalty.”

Wild also felt Rovers goalkeeper Marko Marosi got Clarke dismissed in stoppage time for violent conduct.

“Their keeper has got him sent off by rolling around,” he said.

Grant McCann, who is the first Doncaster boss since his legendary compatriot Peter Doherty to reach the last 16 of the Cup, felt it was a penalty. “I don’t think our players would have been jumping around if it was not handball,” he said.

“It’s good to hear another Northern Irishman was the last manager to get to the fifth round. I’m so proud of the players.”

Whiteman scored his first goal in the 68th minute with a deflected 20yard drive.

Clarke levelled on 84 minutes from close range. Then came the controversial climax when Tom Anderson hit the bar and Rovers were awarded their penalty in the ensuing melee.
