They need a good plan
THIS is an unprecedented step by the Queen in an attempt to resolve the Sussex crisis.
It underlines the urgency to bring an end to an escalating situation before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might be tempted to turn to outside sources for support.
We are taken back to the days of the early 90s when the Queen and Prince Philip had meetings with Charles and Diana in the hope that they could mend their troubled marriage and avoid separation.
Now it is thewales’s second son, Harry, and his wife Meghan who appear to be in the process of separating from the Royal Family.
Despite the good intentions of making solid progress, the next steps may not be easy.
There are considerable hurdles to overcome for a couple who want to retain some royal status, some financial support, plus tax-payer paid security.
There is the question of the raising and education of the Sussex’s son, Archie, and any future children. While Archie is portable as a baby, there needs to be a properly thought-out plan for his schooling while his parents are crossing continents in their quest for “financial independence”.
Then there are the legal and tax implications for the couple operating commercially, as they apparently intend, in different countries. This is particularly the case for Meghan, who remains an American citizen. It is to be hoped that Harry and Meghan have considered this in their plans.
