Double family tragedy as Covid takes dad and daughter within days

A FORMER police officer died from coronaviru­s just days after it claimed the life of his daughter.

David Davis MP led the tributes to Davidwhinc­up, 79, who was well known in East Yorkshire for his charity work.

The MP for Haltempric­e and Howden said: “David was the kindest, most thoughtful man I have had the privilege to meet.” His death followed the death of daughter Joanne Rennison, 52, who suffered from multiple sclerosis.

Mr Whincup and his wife Margaret, from Cottingham, Eastyorksh­ire, were directors of a nursery in Beverley.

A “larger-than-life” care home patient, who was aged 107, was also among the latest victims of Covid-19 announced yesterday.

Ethel Lees, who succumbed to coronaviru­s at Lochleven Care Home in Dundee on April 24, is thought to be Scotland’s oldest victim. Manager Andrew Chalmers-gall said: “She was fiercely independen­t, living in her own home until 2018.” And a nurse who died will be remembered for her “lovely smile”, hospice bosses said.

Gill Oakes, a senior clinical support nurse at Bolton Hospice for nearly 24 years, died at Royal Bolton Hospital on Thursday.

She is one of at least 171 health and social care workers now believed to have died from Covid-19.

The health department of announced 621 new victims yesterday, taking the UK’S total death toll to 28,131. Nurse Emilita Hurboda was among them. Daughter Michelle, from Nottingham, said her mother left the Philippine­s to give her family a better life.

Ray Lever, a domestic services assistant at Northern General Hospital, has died with Covid-19 Sheffield NHS Trust said. Daughters Rachel, Kathryn, and Rebecca described him as “the perfect dad and grandad.”
