EVE MYLES has gone gritty. Thewelsh actress, last seen flouncing around in period costume invictoria, has joined the growing ranks of contemporarytv detectives in edgy dramawe Hunttogether.

If you like your villainy with suspense, gore, and distant echoes of Prime Suspect, then this – an original series for crime channel

Alibi – this is the one. Myles as DS Lola Franks is up against a formidable foe – serial killer Freddy, played by Hermione Corfield. DS Franks is hunting her while Freddy is seemingly hunting for sadistic pleasure... and more victims.

There’s another level to this tale. Eve has a very annoying sidekick in DI Jackson Mendy (Babou

Cessay) who just happens to outrank her and make the hunt even more difficult.

“Jackson is there to rattle every feather that she’s got on her back,” Eve tells me. “She’s in a place where she’s comfortable – at work – and where she’s happy to be, but you find her very cold and prickly and not wanting to be seen or involved in anything, or connected to anybody or anything.

“DI Jackson keeps pulling her out of that and poking her in bits she doesn’t want to be poked in, so you find her in a very vulnerable place.”

So with Jackson muddling her feelings, Franks must contend with sociopath Freddy, who teams up with a former child soldier Baba (Dipo Ola). Between them, they have a sadistic streak which is played out in the first episode.

Hermione thinks Freddy will provoke debate. “It’ll be interesting to see if people like her and relate to her. But the big debate will be whether she’s pure evil or not. Nature or nurture will be a subject that people will hopefully talk about.”

They may also debate the tone of the drama which moves sharply from suspense to darkly comic.

“When you get a script that enables you as an actor to find dark humour, in amongst the darkest moments, you’ve found something very special and unique,” says Eve. “This script does that, it goes to very, very dark, grotesque places and then it comes back with something very silly and funny and light-hearted. You’ll walk into a crime scene and it should be your cop show, but we’ve kicked all that kind of stuff out the window.”

Hermione was also inspired by a difference in tone. “I think drama, comedy and thriller are the three
