MAGIC MASON IS

Boss hails Greenwood’s special

THE charge of the Manchester United young brigade continued at full pelt yesterday as they thrashed Bournemouth 5-2 led by the goals of teenage star Mason Greenwood. “That was a game for the fans,” said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who so wished the club’s legion of supporters could have been inside Old Trafford to see the fireworks.

“It’s too bad they can’t be here at the moment.the Stretford End would have enjoyed those goals today.”

Greenwood was the pick of the bunch with two fabulous goals – the second was particularly impressive, dancing and

Bournemouth defenders before scoring with a powerful right-foot drive.

“He is a fantastic goalscorer,” said Solskjaer. “He is a special player and he scored at important moments today.

“We will try to nurture and manage him as well as we can because he is a very talented boy.

“I was very happy today with the energy in the team and the goals we scored.the strikers are on the same team and working towards one common goal.

“That is one of the positive things about the forwards – they are good friends and keep challenging each other.”

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial also scored in the victory yesterday and the trio now have 55 goals combined, an indication of just how quickly this young team is developing as they try to win a Champions League place. Bruno Fernandes completed the rout with the fifth goal. A run of 16 games unbeaten tells its own story; confidence is flying, as Rashford indicated.

“It was a very enjoyable game to win today,” said the England striker. “It doesn’t matter who scores the goals as long as we are scoring and picking up points in the table.

“But when the forwards are scoring it’s very positive for a team.these are definitely exciting times.

“Mason took his goals well, left foot, right foot – he can finish. Both sides are comfortable for him.

“I don’t want to put too much emphasis on him. Let him just play his football and show what he can do. It is a big bonus to have him in the squad. “What’s important now is for us to push on for the rest of the season.

“We have to try to rectify the defensive mistakes.we won’t always score four or five goals in a game.” Bournemouth, in contrast, are looking ever more likely to be relegated down to the Championship, with matches running out fast.

They played with pride and panache yesterday, even taking the lead early in the game, and manager Eddie Howe could reflect on some positive aspects. “I thought we were a genuine threat and I didn’t see that result coming after our start in the match. “Mason Greenwood’s goal was one of real quality. It made our lives a lot harder.

“It is fine margins.there were a lot of incidents in the game but we can’t be conceding five goals.

“It is a real test of our inner strength to bounce back from the results we’ve had. I saw signs today the attacking side of our game is still there.that is the big plus to take.

“We are in a negative cycle and we need to break that quickly.”
