Yorkshire aristocrac­y, was formed, one of the first official women’s clubs. The real turning point, however, came in 1926. A female hockey team had travelled to Herefordsh­ire and after the game discussed women’s cricket. The Women’s Cricket Associatio­n was born; inside 10 years more than 100 clubs were affiliated.

In 1934 England’s women went to Australia for the first Test series. England won two and drew one, then went to New Zealand. England’s Betty Snowball scored 189 in 222 minutes, the highest-ever Test score by an Englishwom­an.

In 1958 the Internatio­nal Women’s Cricket Council was formed and took charge of the game. It went from strength to strength – in 2009 England’s women won the World Cup for the third time and leading run scorer Claire Taylor was named one of Wisden’s cricketers of the year, the first time a woman had received the award in its 120-year history.

In 2017 England repeated the World Cup feat, this time against India at Lords. It is estimated that 180 million people around the world tuned in for the tournament.
