Tears on their wedding day...the brides forced to cancel after last-minute shift

- By Tony Whitfield

BRIDES who expected to get married this weekend or next have been left in floods of tears after the Government scuppered their plans at the 11th hour.

Couples had been told they could hold receptions for up to 30 guests from yesterday. But just one day before the new rule was due to come into effect, it was scrapped over fears of rising cases of Covid-19.

Among those hoping to tie the knot in front of her family and friends was Amanda Kellett, who had booked her wedding reception for next Saturday.

Like all brides she will now be limited to hosting just six people outside or two households inside.

Amanda, from Grimsby, told Sky News yesterday: “I was devastated. Absolutely devastated.

“We’ve got friends and family who’ve booked hotel accommodation. We’ve booked hotel accommodation.

“We just don’t know how much of our wedding we can actually move

forward with.” She now expects she will be saying her vows while wearing a face mask in front of empty chairs.

She said: “Weddings are stressful enough without Covid.we’ve been through a hell of an emotional roller coaster and the most important thing is to get married.”

Meanwhile Graham Podesta, 53, said his daughter Jamie, 21, had been left in “floods of tears” following Friday’s announcement. She was due to get married yesterday.

Graham said: “Literally, we had 24 hours to pull the plug.

“We had to tell people who are travelling not to travel, people who have booked intotravelodge not to do that, it’s just a whole nightmare.”

With the catering already paid for, Graham, from Gillingham in Kent, added: “Obviously we will be out of pocket but it’s no way near as annoying as the effect it’s having on my daughter.

“The poor kids are desperate to be married.this is supposed to be a momentous, special occasion for the pair of them. It’s very frustrating.”

He said that although he agreed with the Government’s reasoning, more notice should have been given.

Graham added: “They can’t just spring on a bride within 24 hours that her wedding has gone out the window.”
