When two great institutions met... and then made the other giggle

George and the giant... shark tooth!

- By Richard Palmer ROYAL CORRESPONDENT

SIR DAVID Attenborough was a natural entertainer as he met one of his biggest fans in Prince George – even presenting the young royal with a prehistoric shark tooth.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children could not contain their excitement at the visit with giggles all round.

George, seven, was thrilled when the veteran naturalist turned up at Kensington Palace with the tooth from a dinosaur, a giant shark called carcharocles megalodon.

Sir David, 94, went to the Palace to join Prince William at a private outdoor screening of his new feature film David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet.

He found the tooth on a family holiday in Malta in the late 1960s, embedded in the island island’s s soft yellow limestone. Carcharocles, which once ruled the oceans, liv lived about 23 million years ago. The species is believed to have grown to 50ft, about twice the length of the great white, the largest shark alive today.

The prehistoric beast was the subject of 2018 action movie The Meg – which had nothing to do with George’s Auntie Meghan.

A royal source said George, who has watched many of Sir David’s documentaries and has a keen interest in the natural world, was “fascinated” by his gift.

It was also a thrill for his siblings Princess Charlotte, five, and two-year-old Prince Louis.

The source said: “The children really enjoyed meeting Sir David. They are big fans of his programmes.”

Their mother Kate has previously revealed how much they like his documentaries and going on family trips to the Natural History Museum in London.

In April, Kate told schoolchildren on a video call that Sir David was probably her favourite celebrity.

His new fi lm is his most personal project to date, looking at the devastating effect climate change has brought to the world.

The source added: “The Duke thought the film was one of Sir David’s best yet. It was a lovely occasion.”

Prince William is said to have become enthralled by Sir David.

He has also taken part in an ITV nature documentary, Prince William: A Planet For Us All, due to be screened on October 5.
