Hotel of the week Sofitel London St James, London SW1

- BY TRUDI ROCHE

WHERE AND WHY Located a five-minute walk from Piccadilly Circus, Sofitel London St James is just a hop and skip away from some of London’s main attractions.

Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, Pall Mall, Buckingham Palace and Downing Street are all easily walkable or explore the beautiful independent shops, restaurants and galleries in the St James district.

The hotel is a mix of old school charm and modern glamour. Our room was immaculate with gorgeous accessories – think Fornasetti plates and Hermes toiletries. Free wi-fi and a huge TV all come as standard. Slippers and robes are provided and the chamomile tea for bedtime was a lovely touch.

The Spa is back open for treatments, bookable in advance, as is the gym if you’re feeling active.

CHECK-IN Covid procedures were spot on. Rooms are sanitised between guest usage and we were met at reception with huge smiles behind the masks. Guests and staff wear masks in public areas, restaurant tables are distanced and there are automatic hand sanitisers on every table in the bar and restaurant.

ON THE MENU After a drink in the St James Bar we headed for dinner in the hotel restaurant, Wild Honey, which combines classic French techniques with the finest seasonal British produce in a relaxed atmosphere with a brilliant eclectic background music playlist – we particularly enjoyed The Clash during pudding!

All the food was top notch but special mention must go to the Classic English custard tart with golden sultanas, pine nuts and salted butter, which tasted sublime. Starters from £9, mains from £16, puddings from £8. In keeping with the name, two beehives reside on the roof and we had a taste of the homemade honeycomb – also delicious. A huge wine list will suit every taste.

Breakfast is included with a full range of offerings, including a morning cocktail if you’re feeling really decadent.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE If you fancy a night in London this is the perfect spot for exploring. It’s an easy walk to the West End and South Bank. We enjoyed a lovely evening stroll down Pall Mall after dinner and a walk in St James’s Park after breakfast. With the leaves turning and a coffee in hand, a truly wonderful start to the day.
