KANE: WE HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN LEAGUE

- By Harry Pratt

HAVING dismissed his penalty controversy much like he leaves defenders in his wake, Harry Kane’s attention turned to Tottenham’s title credentials.

And this time there was no shrugging aside the sudden hype surrounding Jose Mourinho’s men. No way.

After defusing accusations of cheating to win a spot-kick against Brighton last Sunday, calmly declaring it a “50-50” incident, striker Kane positively embraced talk that Spurs can launch a bid for league glory.

Tottenham go to struggling West Brom today and Kane, with six goals and eight assists in seven league games to date, is as optimistic as he has been for some time. The England captain, 27, said: “When you look at the ability of our squad, you would definitely say that we’ve got enough to win a title.

“But I’d also say that we’ve been close over the last four, five years and haven’t quite got over the line, so it’s not as easy as just having a good squad. “But this is a season where I don’t think one team’s going to run away with it. “There are going to be opportunities for teams to put good runs together.

“We’ve got to make sure we don’t get carried away. We’ve been playing well and the last two games have been good for confidence – to grind out results and get ugly wins. “There have still been points dropped from winning positions but if we can win on the weekend we’ll be around the top of the table going into the international break.

“We’d have taken that before the start of the season.”

Much of Kane’s confidence stems from knowing that he is no one-man team, with top scorer Son Heung-min banging in goals galore and summer signing Gareth Bale approaching full fitness.

The frontman added:

“Since we’ve come back from the first lockdown we’ve signed some new players. We have a nice, big, healthy squad and it allows Jose to stamp his identity on the team.

“It’s great to have the likes of Gareth and Joe Hart – who have won the biggest trophies around the world – in the squad, on the pitch and in the dressing room.

“It’s a bonus to have a great team of leaders.

That’s what we need to push all the way. We’ve a lot of experience, and we tell each other how it is and we have a manager who does the same.

“It’s a long way to go but we’re feeling confident.”
