Regret over Hillary ‘monster’ jibe
A FORMER US ambassador to the UN regrets calling Hillary Clinton a “monster” during the first Obama campaign, writes Jaymi Mccann.
Samantha Power, who was last week offered the role as head of the US Agency for International Development under Joe Biden, also described the US as being in a “moment of crises” with the aftermath of Donald Trump’s presidency and coronavirus.
The Pulitzer Prize winner’s career was almost derailed in 2008 when during a newspaper interview, she criticised Clinton while talking on the phone.
It led to her leaving the thensenator Obama’s campaign.
She told today’s Desert Island Discs: “Even at the time I couldn’t believe that I had said it. I regret it to this day. I did have a chance to apologise to her in person and, of course, I had a chance to work with her.”
She added that she is happy to take up the new role as they need “all hands on deck” in this “moment of crises”.
