- By Benjamin Russell

MUCH of the UK was hit by snow or rain yesterday – with warnings the worst is yet to come.

Snow fell across south-east England, the Midlands, the North and intowales and Scotland, while those living in Devon and Cornwall were braced for more flooding after being battered by torrential rain.

In Gloucestershire yesterday, fire crews were called out to pump away flood water intirley, and in Tewkesbury, the Environment Agency issued a flood warning, with rivers in the area expected to peak this evening.

Yellow warnings for ice were in place across much of northern England and Scotland, with motorists urged to take care in treacherous conditions.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola

Maxey said the cold snap was caused by a series of weather fronts moving up from the south-west.

She said: “As this rain starts to move north, it will combine with cold air, causing snow across much ofwales, where up to 20cm could fall in the highest regions.

“Large swathes of the UK will see some form of snow, with warnings in place for much of Scotland and the north-east of England.”

Much of England and Wales will also see snowfall and ice between tomorrow andwednesday.

Forecasters added some rural communities could become “cut off” due to the wintry weather.

Ms Maxey said it would also remain cold, with temperatures only reaching around 6C.

She added: “Another front will move in from the south-west, with long periods of snow and icy conditions for most of England, Wales and Scotland.

“Up to 5cm is expected off the coasts, which will reach highs of 15cm in the higher areas in Scotland and Wales.”

Onthursday, parts of Scotland were blanketed by up to 19cm of snow, while south-west England recorded almost 3cm of rainfall.
