Wills talks to first US green chief

-

PRINCEWILLIAM, who has been outspoken on green issues, held a telephone meeting on Friday with the US Special

Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry.

Mr Kerry is the first US diplomat to sit on the National Security Council and be entirely dedicated to combating the threat from climate change.

Yesterday, Microsoft founder Bill Gates said the

world faces a challenge to cut carbon dioxide emissions from 51 billion tons to net zero by 2050.

Mr Gates, 65, who has written a new book How To Avoid A Climate Disaster, said movements such as Extinction Rebellion mean well but there are better ways to raise awareness.

He said: “Their passion is valuable but it’s going to manifest in ways that aren’t constructive.we need to channel that energy in a way that takes 51bn and moves it towards zero.”

ANOTHER minister who continues to be very impressive is our Home Secretary Priti Patel. It was thoughtful of her to pen an open letter to the children of police officers who have been trying to ensure that the lockdown rules are followed on top of their other daily duties.

It has been a tough job for the police and one where they have been criticised for problems created by others.

But Ms Patel is right to say they are “the best of us” and “true heroes” and that their children should be proud of them.

The letter is also a reminder that the heroes of this virus – whether in the police, the NHS or the care services – have all had to make sacrifices which all too often have also been borne by their families.

Children of our public servants have seen less of their parents in these difficult days.

It is pleasing to have a government where the ministers recognise these hardships and hopefully will act to reward those who have forgone so much.
