Forest so close to axing Woody hopes

- By John Wragg

JONATHAN WOODGATE almost saw his chances of landing the Bournemouth job ruined by Glenn Murray.

Forest veteran Murray had a header cleared off the line 11 minutes from time – and Woodgate kept his unbeaten start as caretaker boss.

This was hard work for Woody and under-achieving Bournemouth as they try to stay in the Championship’s top six. But he is unbeaten in three, including Tuesday’s FA Cup victory at Premier League Burnley.

Rotherham is the next challenge onwednesday and Woodgate will be in charge but Bournemouth are thinking big, with David Wagner and Patrickvieira on their wanted list.

“This is a great learning experience for me,” said Woodgate. “This was a difficult game.they set up well and we couldn’t break them down.”

Junior Stanislas and Shane Long had chances for the Cherries but Murray went closest for Forest, beaten only once in 11 league games.

Boss Chris Hughton said: “I had Murray at Brighton and know what he can do. He keeps himself very fit.”

CHARLIE WYKE scored all four goals as Sunderland enjoyed a dominant

4-1 home win in their clash against fellow play-off hopefuls Doncaster.

The deadly Black Cats combination of Aiden Mcgeady and Wyke (right) came to the fore as the striker’s super haul included a hat-trick of headers before the break. Doncaster hit back through a

Lee Burge own goal.

Gillingham came out on top in an action-packed 3-2 win at Charlton.

Olly Lee opened the scoring for the visitors but his effort was cancelled out by Chuks Aneke.

The Gills regained the lead with a volley by Connor Ogilvie, only for Jayden Stockley to level. The Addicks were reduced to 10 men when Aneke was shown a red card, with Kyle Dempsey hitting the winner four minutes from time.

Grant Mccann’s Hull remain second despite falling to a 1-0 home

defeat to MK Dons. Scott Fraser stepped up to slot home an 80thminute spot-kick to secure victory for Russell Martin’s side.

Plymouth are unbeaten in eight league games following a 1-0 win against Fleetwood, courtesy of an own goal from Harrison Holgate.

Burton remain bottom despite a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Northampton, whose winless league streak was extended to seven games by Michael Bostwick’s goal and Ryan Edwards’ stoppage-time strike.

JESSE LINGARD’S start to life as a West Ham player has caught the eye of his old Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Lingard, 28 (left) made an immediate impact after completing his loan move to the London Stadium by scoring twice on his debut against Aston Villa.

And as the midfielder prepares for his third start in tomorrow’s home game against Sheffield

United, Hammers boss David

Moyes revealed that the man who played such a significant role in Lingard’s football education at

Old Trafford has been in touch to wish him well.

Moyes said: “Jesse has only been here in the short term but already I’ve spoken with Sir Alex, who asked me to pass on his best.

“He mentioned he was thinking about Jesse because Sir Alex had him as a boy at Old Trafford and then when I was there I had him for a little bit as well.

“That just shows you the interest Sir Alex (left) has in all the young players he had – all his teams and all his clubs he shows a great interest in them. He was pleased Jesse got off to a good start.

“I refer back to my time at Everton, when I brought Phil

Neville and Tim Howard in from

By Name here

Manchester United. Phil was great for his mentality and what he brought – it really gave us another edge.

“As a player as well he gave us something else and I’m hoping Jesse does the same.”

Like Lingard, Moyes has experience of battling it out for European places and he knows that will be a vital ingredient as his team push for a top-six finish. But he refuses to rule his side fully in the chase for Champions League and Europa League spots.

Moyes added: “In a strange way, when you move up the league people expect more. It is part of a manager’s job to raise

expectations.

WEST HAM

“We are in a great

V SHEFF UTD position but until we get to single-digit games left TOMORROW 6PM we can’t really say that.”
