Leslie Newson was the last to be recovered.
His cab had been crushed from 3ft to 6in.
The cause was a mystery. There was no defect with the train or the track. Witnesses described 56-year-old Newson as sitting upright and staring forward. His hand remained on the “dead man’s handle”, the safety mechanism which cuts power if released. A post mortem examination found no medical explanation.
Suicide was mooted, and there were suggestions Newson had overshot the platform on at least one previous occasion. One inquest expert said of the overshoots: “That does not sound like misjudgment to me. That sounds like a man who is getting the feeling of how to run a train into a wall.” However colleagues say his behaviour was perfectly normal before the crash – he had even been planning to buy a car.
Ultimately, the jury returned verdicts of accidental death. A further inquiry found there was insufficient evidence to determine if the accident was due to a deliberate act or a medical condition, but the fault was found to lie with the driver.
