taking civilian prisoners from 1934. It was specifical­ly designed to house inmates considered too dangerous to be held in any other jail. The Rock, as it was known, was the end of the road for the worst of the worst.

Each prisoner had their own tiny cell and there was a guard for every three inmates.

The Chicago gangster was transferre­d there after it was discovered he was still running his criminal empire from behind bars in Atlanta. He spent four and a half years on the Rock and once told the warden “It looks like Alcatraz has got me licked.”

Being inescapabl­e didn’t stop inmates from trying. There were at least 14 attempts, involving 36 prisoners. Of these, 23 were captured, six shot and killed, and two confirmed drowned. The remaining five are presumed drowned, although rumours persist that at least one may have made it to safety.

Alcatraz closed because costs of running the island were huge and the buildings crumbling.
