After the dark days, Brexit spring beckons

-

OUR Prime Minister is famous for his unconventional hair but even those closest to him would agree he definitely needs a trim.

So little wonder that Boris Johnson yesterday was enthusiastic about the idea of getting a haircut on April 12.

After three long months of lockdown giving most of us ever-lengthening tresses, it is a desire that the vast majority of the country will share.

And, like Mr Johnson, we will all raise a glass when the pubs can reopen and the economy can get going again, hopefully in just a few weeks, as tomorrow marks the first step towards an end to the restrictions.

What is clear from the Prime Minister and the briefing from a senior minister in today’s Sunday Express is that after the dark days of the pandemic Britain has much to look forward to.

Finally, with the economy freed along with the British people, we will be able to fully enjoy the economic bounce that Brexit has given us.

The platinum lining of these last months is that Britain is healthier and more successful outside the EU.

Just look at the huge success of the vaccine rollout here compared to the disaster overseen by Ursula von der Leyen and her European Commission in Brussels.

But with the freedoms of Brexit, the ability to unlock the economy, the new trade deals and the confirmation that nobody innovates better than Britain, things are looking very positive.

The only question mark on the horizon is whether concerns from some within the scientific community will try to slow the roadmap out of lockdown.

We have seen from revelations of the abuse suffered by some eminent scientists who do not support this more cautious approach that it is extremely hard to stand up to the supporters of tougher, longer restrictions.

So the Prime Minister must heed the warnings from Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the powerful 1922 Committee, that there can be no going back or slippage of the dates in the roadmap.

A vaccinated Britain now needs its freedoms to succeed and, as the Prime Minister puts it, “get back to the life we love”.
