Ibis Bristol Centre
WHERE AND WHY: The ibis in Bristol city centre is in the trendy Harbourside area. It is the perfect location, a stone’s throw from countless attractions, restaurants, shops and bars. Check-in was delightfully quick and efficient. The rooms have a modern, functional feel. Mine had everything I needed — comfy bed, plenty of space, a powerful shower and a TV with lots of channels.
Wi-fi access is included and, unlike some hotels, it’s a decent connection so you can finish off a bit of work or browse social media without any trouble.
ON THE MENU:
Grab a bite to eat and a drink in the hotel’s restaurant/bar Charlie’s Corner. It has a great atmosphere and looks stylish, with colourful chairs and black and white murals, and there’s plenty of outdoor seating on its terrace so you can enjoy the buzz of the Harbourside.
Given this is a value hotel, I was really impressed. The breakfast has Continental and cooked options. And the bar has a decent selection, from craft beers, which it specialises in, to Jagerbombs. Be careful — they were on offer when I visited! I also made the most of the specialist gin list.
If you fancy heading out for something to eat, there is plenty of choice.
Slug and Lettuce, Pitcher and Piano, Las Iguanas and Pizza Express are all nearby. The area is popular and they get very busy, so it’s advisable to book in advance if you can.
WHILE YOU’RE THERE: Bristol Aquarium is just two minutes’ walk away and houses everything from tropical sharks and rays to seahorses and puffer fish.
And if you’re up for a challenge, have a go at Locked In A Room, which is the city’s largest escape room.
Also within walking distance is Cabot Circus shopping centre, which boasts more than
130 stores.
Bristol Hippodrome has reopened after months of empty seats due to coronavirus restrictions, so it’s worth seeing what’s on.
In the coming months you can catch
Jimmy Carr, Jason Donovan, Rhod Gilbert and Katherine Ryan.
