Classy Lingard sets right example to Three Lions outcasts

- By Harry Pratt

GARETH SOUTHGATE believes Jesse Lingard is an example to every England outcast that there is always a way back to the top.

This time last year the Manchester United forward, 28, was on the scrapheap with both club and country as he was completely frozen out at Old Trafford.

But that was before an incredible loan spell atwest Ham led to his unexpected recall into the Three Lions set-up ahead of the European Championships – although he missed out on a place at the tournament.

Lingard (left) is now a regular in Southgate’s squad following superb cameo displays with United this season.

The England boss said: “Jesse is a fantastically resilient character.

‘‘Not every player is able to come off the bench and have a big impact but Jesse has always been able to do that.

‘‘That’s probably not a great thing when it comes to starting more often.

‘‘But this season he’s scored twice off the bench, he had an assist in Europe last week and then was very close himself with another chance.

“He’s always been a consistent performer for us – and we’ve got great faith and belief in him.

“Even though he’s not playing as much as you would ideally like, his performances with England are almost unquestionable.

“He has a challenge to get that game time at Old Trafford but all you can do if you get five minutes is make it the best of it. And, if you get 15, have that impact within the 15.

“That’s how you gain the trust of your managers and coaches. You slowly get your game time and then you get your rewards long term.”
