THE secret journal of the first military officer to see the world’s only “official” UFO crash site may reveal the truth about Roswell, a documentary claims.

A six-part TV series will take a fresh look at the case using the diary left by Major Jesse Marcel.

The Roswell Incident has become the stuff of conspiracy theories since July 1947, when a US Air Force base in New Mexico issued a press release stating it had recovered a “flying disc”.

The story has captivated the world and there is even a huge museum in Roswell largely dedicated to UFOS.

However, the US Army swiftly insisted that the downed object at the base was just a weather balloon. Later, when Marcel was pictured at a press conference with the debris, it seemed like the case was closed.

But in 1978, Marcel finally claimed that what he had found was not from this world, and that he had been ordered to keep quiet as part of a huge cover-up.

Now former CIA agent Ben Smith says he started to probe the case to help the Major’s family discover if “he was crazy or not”. And after speaking with his three grandchildren and using new technology at the crash site, Ben, 41, says the Major’s family are convinced he was forced to deny what he had seen.they believe his journal holds the key.

Mr Smith said: “He was the first official on the scene. He was a credible witness. Now we have this journal. It shows a change in handwriting and the use of uncharacteristic phrases.why?

“Could these be encrypted messages or was there some other counter-intelligence reason to hide information in plain sight? We’re still working on it.”

After his discharge in 1958, Marcel worked as a TV repair man and died in 1986.

Mr Smith visited New Mexico with scientists for Roswell:the First Witness. He said: “I think something definitely crashed and there was definitely a cover-up.

“What it was and why remains the question.”
