Bid to stop extremists jetting off for training

- By David Williamson

A GOVERNMENT adviser is set to call for a law change to stop extremists going abroad to be trained as terrorists.

Jonathan Hall KC has been conducting an independent review of terrorism legislation.

His report is due to land in the coming weeks with a host of recommendations to keep people safe.

In it he is expected to press for the law to be changed so Britain can “throw the book” at anyone leaving the country to attend a terror camp – especially if they take their children with them.

He is also said to want action to tackle the threat of guns created with 3D printing technology.

Mr Hall last year warned extremists were “waiting in the wings” to use the Israel-gaza conflict to recruit people for terror attacks. He has previously

suggested the Terrorism

Act be updated to cover “glorification of terrorist acts” instead of just the groups behind atrocities.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: “The Government’s priority remains maintaining the safety and security of the UK. Any person who travels to conflict zones to engage in unlawful activity should expect to be investigated upon their return and prosecuted [if] they’ve broken the law.

“We are also committed to tackling radicalisation online and are cracking down to ensure there are no safe spaces online for any terrorist to promote or share extreme views.”

She added: “A 3D printed firearm is subject to the law in the same way as any other firearm.”

Former security minister Sir John Hayes said: “The overseas training of terrorists has long been a profound concern. If there is any suspicion someone is travelling abroad for those purposes they should be confined to the country permanently.”
