The X Factor is back... and Cheryl is moved to tears

Sunday Express - - Front Page - By Mark Reynolds

HANKIES at the ready...The X Factor is back on TV tonight and so are the tears and the tantrums.

For returning judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, the first show of the new series is especially sentimental.

The star is overcome when a blast from the past returns and performs a heart-rending audition.

Amy Connolly, 25, reached the judges’ houses stage in the series back in 2008 but never made the live shows.

She returns looking a lot different and much more confident and after her performance of With You from the musical Ghost, Cheryl bursts into tears, and sobs: “That was beautiful.”

Cheryl, 31, gets emotional again as Irish teenager Ben Quinlan, 19, serenades her before handing her a green rose.

New judge and former Spice Girl Mel B, 39, is also moved to tears when former marine Jay James, 30, sings Great Big World’s Say Something. She tells him: “You made me cry and I don’t cry!”

No tears from Simon Cowell, though. Instead the 54-year-old loses his temper, smashing someone’s guitar then refusing to pay for the damage.

He says: “It got so dreary. I could not listen to another person murder a song with a guitar while staring at the floor. And I didn’t buy them a new one.”

Then he tells one contestant: “You sound like you’ve swallowed a bunch of different people all screaming to come out.” The freaks and oddballs are back on the show after being banned while Take That’s Gary Barlow, 43, was a judge.

They include “Jedward’’ style sister act Blonde Electric, hairdresser Jale Antor, 42, who dresses up as Cheryl, sales assistant Steve Callegari, 52, keyboard player and plasterer Shayden Willis, 39, and Angelina Robinson whose mum brings a Chinese food feast for the panel.

Meanwhile the judges are bickering behind the scenes.

At a press conference this week, Cheryl caused a stir by demanding to have Cowell’s luxury dressing room – which includes a bath tub. Cowell responded: “I paid for mine to be nice. You can’t have it. Maybe just use the bath. I’m not giving it up.”

The music supremo said the former Mrs Cole was fast becoming “a princess” and “Miss Bossy Boots”. Just what the show needs, viewers might

think.

X Factor returns on ITV tonight at 8pm.
