Doc warns Jose: Clean up your act

- By Darren Witcoop

TOMMY DOCHERTY says new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho must clean up his act at Old Trafford.

Mourinho has built up a lengthy crime sheet during his career in the dug-out.

Influential United director Sir Bobby Charlton said in 2012 that Mourinho was a showman and not befitting of a United mana ger.

That was after eye-gouging Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova – one of many battles played out in public.

Now ex-United boss Docherty insists Mourinho (below) will have been warned his antics won’t be tolerated at his new club.

The Doc, in charge from 1972-77, said: “Mourinho now has the biggest club job in football and with that come responsibilities.

“You can’t be having petty squabbles, poking opposition coaches in the eye and keep picking fights with referees and the FA.

“Every United manager handles himself differently. Dave Sexton was very quiet and Sir Alex Ferguson was an authoritative figure, who took control.

“But I’d be surprised if Sir Bobby wasn’t a bit worried by Mourinho’s appointment. His comments a few years ago suggest that.

“They would have asked him to use his head and think of his actions.

“His track record as a manager is great but off the pitch it certainly isn’t and he must improve his image. You can’t get away with such things at Manchester United.”

Only Mourinho eclipses Sir Alex Ferguson’s win percentage since the formation of Premier League.

The Special One will be charged with bringing a swagger back to a United side that slumped under Louis van Gaal.

And Docherty (above) says Mourinho should make sweeping changes to usher in a new era.

The Doc, 88, added: “United have looked stale in the last few years and have needed a change. The playing style under Van Gaal was drab at best.

“Some players must go and they need to play with more pace.

“I’d like Gary Neville to come back as Mourinho’s assistant. At least he went to Spain and gave management a go.

“Ryan Giggs needs to get out of the comfort zone and be his own man.”
