Haq’s cup call to fans

-

MAJID Haq last night called on Clydesdale to end a 28-year wait for Scottish Cup glory, and he wants the club’s fans to turn out in force at Hamilton Crescent today when holders Arbroath will be roared on by a travelling contingent of several hundred.

“It’s been far too long for a club of Clydesdale’s stature not to win the cup,” Haq said. “We came close two years ago when we lost in the final, but I believe we have a stronger team now.

“We want to make the most of our chance to write a bit of history for the club, but we know Arbroath will not want to relinquish the trophy.

“They are a very competitive team and capable of getting on top of you, so we have to match them in every department.”

Despite the final being in their home city, Clydesdale’s supporters may be outnumbered and Haq, who has two winners’ medals from his time at Ferguslie, added: “We know they are bringing several bus-loads of supporters and that will give their players a lift.

“When I won the tournament with Ferguslie we had tremendous backing on both occasions, which really added to the atmosphere, so I hope Clydesdale people will turn out and act as a 12th man for us.”

Arbroath captain Marc Petrie is wary of a Dale side who boast three full internationals and a clutch of rising stars. “I have huge respect for them and know they have a number of potential match-winners,” he said.

“But we will concentrate on our own strengths and hopefully repeat last year’s success.”
