Chelsea Manning was released from prison after serving seven years of her 35-year sentence for transmitti­ng US state secrets to WikiLeaks. “Okay, so here I am everyone!!” she wrote on Instagram, alongside the first photograph of herself as a free transgende­r woman. Hughes, 26, has become the youngest British climber to scale Mount Everest from both sides, simultaneo­usly becoming the youngest European and British woman to do so. She hopes to raise more that £8,000 for Cancer Research UK, £1 for every metre climbed. In a message from the summit she said she was “elated” and “exhausted”. Billy Connolly has had a radical makeover in three 30ft high paintings by Rachel Maclean, John Byrne and Jack Vettriano. Commission­ed by BBC Scotland, the works will appear on walls throughout his home city of Glasgow this year as he turns 75. Connolly said it was “a real privilege to be part of these artists’ work”.
