8. Possibly John Hay, second son of 2nd Marquess Lord John Hay (1668-1706) was the second son of the 2nd Marquess and Lady Mary Maitland. He served in the Royal Scots Dragoons. In 1704, he was made Brigadier General. He married twice – first to Lady Mary Dalzell, only daughter of James Dalzell, 3rd Earl of Carnwath, then to Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Charles Orby, of Crowland, Lincolnshi­re.

5 9. Robert Ker, 3rd Earl of Roxburghe (1658-1682), married Margaret Hay, Tweeddale’s eldest daughter. He died tragically, aged 24, in a shipwreck off the coast of Yarmouth while accompanyi­ng James, Duke of York, from London to Scotland.

16 4. Margaret Hay, eldest daughter of 1st Marquess (about 1657-1753). In 1675, she married Robert Ker, the 3rd Earl of Roxburghe (9). Two years later, she had a son, Robert. He inherited the earldom at five after his dad died. Robert lost his life at 24 and his brother John succeeded him as 5th Earl. 14. Jean Hay, 2nd daughter of 2nd Marquess Countess of Rothes (1666-1731). Lady Jean was the daughter of the 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale and Lady Mary Maitland. She married John Leslie, 9th Earl of Rothes, in 1697 and the marriage saw the union of two of Scotland’s most eminent families, the Tweeddales and the Rothes. They had eight sons and four daughters and lived at Leslie House in Fife. The house was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1763.
