Rappers in Hall of Fame with attitude

-

NWA have entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – and hit out at musicians who think rappers don’t belong there.

The groundbreaking group, who helped define the rough streets of Los Angeles in the late 80s, were inducted at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre alongside 70s- era rock acts Chicago, Deep Purple and Steve Miller.

NWA’s work tilted the balance towards west coast rap in the late 80s on songs such as Boyz-N-The Hood a nd St ra i g ht Out t a Compton.

Following the act’s breakup, Dr Dre became one of music’s most in- demand producers and a billionaire with a hi-tech headphone firm, while Ice Cube moves between music and a successful acting career.

Some traditional rockers have slammed the induction of rap acts into the Hall of Fame – most prominent among them being Kiss’s Gene Simmons, whose band were inducted last year.

But NWA star MC Ren said: “I want to say to Gene Simmons – hip-hop is here forever. Get used to it.”

Ice Cube added: “Rock ‘n’ roll is not conforming to the people who came before you but creating your own path in music and in life. That is rock ‘n’ roll – and that is us.”

The hip- hop heroes were inducted by rapper Kendrick Lamar. He said NWA “proved to every kid in the ghetto that you could be successful and still have your voice while doing it”.

Today we launch the fourth Golden Cone Awards, our annual search for the country’s best ice cream parlour.

We’ve teamed up with Waverley Bakery, Scotland’s only wafer and cone producer, to find the one place guaranteed to drive their customers flakey with joy.

From traditional Italian cafes to nostalgic seaside parlours, from hole-in-the-wall outlets to gleaming diners, we’ll travel the length and breadth of the nation to discover the very best.

Previous recipients of the coveted Golden Cone trophy include Visocchi’s of Broughty Ferry in Dundee, Jannetta’s of St Andrews and Nardini’s of Largs in Ayrshire – and the 2016 prize is now up for grabs.

So if there’s a parlour that really floats your ice cream or sprinkles stardust on your tastebuds, we need you to tell us all about it. The Golden Cone could be standing on a counter near you very soon.

And for one cafe owner, winning the Golden Cone would be ice magic after a real struggle. When the receivers moved in on her family’s business, Toni Dawson could only watch as everything they owned was taken away.

Thirty years of hard work in ice cream cafes and seaside entertainment disappeared overnight, leaving the Dawsons without a home or livelihood.

But the love of ice cream she had learned from her mum as a child never left her – and it has transformed Toni’s fortunes.

She has just been given a top business award from the firm who liquidated her family’s beloved company – and it’s all thanks to the cafe she set up as they struggled to get back on their feet.

Toni, 47, from Largs, said: “When I heard about being nominated for
