Shuffle was ace for Yogi

- Anthony Haggerty

Inverness boss John Hughes reckons his last-gasp change of tactics left Dundee United “bamboozled” at Tannadice.

Yogi ripped up a game plan he had been working on all week after watching his players warm-up.

It was a trick he learned from his old Falkirk gaffer Jim Jefferies – and the change of heart paid off as his side romped to a 2-0 victory.

Hughes said: “Our shape bamboozled Dundee United.

“I brought the players in and changed it after the warm-up.

“I didn’t fancy what I had been working on during the week. Jim was fantastic at tearing his shape up at the last minute and saying: ‘I’ve got a hunch.’

“Nine times out of 10 he got it right. I put it on the tactics board and changed the personnel.

“We were going to play a four diamond with two up front but instead we moved to five at the back.

“It was a great victory and we did a professional job.

“That was more like the Inverness of last year.”

The only frustration for the Inverness boss was that it wasn’t enough to secure a top-six place.

He said: “We have run out of games to make the top six.

“We were looking for results elsewhere and they did not go our way.”

Hughes also heaped praise on Miles Storey after the on-loan Swindon striker bagged his 11th goal of the campaign.

He said “Miles can be anything he wants. The problem is that he beats himself up too much when he misses a chance.

“I keep telling him to go back for more. His movement and pace make him a threat.”
