a couple of months ago and recently we have picked up results and reduced the gap but today was a big disappointment.

“I can’t accept that display, it’s as simple as that.” A minute’s applause was held before kick-off to honour former United director Derek Robertson as wel l as Ian Britton, who was part of the team that won the title back in 1983.

Those glory days are a far cry from the club’s current plight and the fans knew this was a must-win game after the loss at Firhill in midweek.

Coll Donaldson missed that clash with a ban but he was back here and helped United get off to a good start. They had an early chance when Billy Mckay was “What a load of dross! Mixu should be chasing those players into the dressing room.”

@Grantomac fouled by Gary Warren on the edge of the box.

Guy Demel fired in the freekick but Owain Fon Williams dived down to his left to somehow scramble the ball to safety.

Oppos i t e number E i j i Kawashima then came to United’s rescue on 12 minutes wwhen he blocked Storey’s shot with his legs.

However, barely 60 seconds later Inverness grabbed the lead . Ross Draper ’s low centre across the face of goal fell invitingly for the unmarked Storey and he tapped home from close range for his 11th goal of the season.

Inverness nearly doubled their lead on 26 minutes when Vigurs slung over a corner and Warren’s near-post header was saved down low by Kawashima.

Moments later Greg Tansey split the defence wide open only for Storey to shoot high and wide with the goal at his mercy.

United flew out the traps at the start of the second half and Demel hit a rising shot from six yards that Fon Williams could only palm into the air – with Carl Tremarco completing the clearance with his head.

That momentum was lost though as Inverness made it 2- 0 after 50 minutes.

Tansey swung over a corner which was partially cleared and Vigurs cracked home a sweet low drive with his r ight foot from outside the box.

United suffered another blow on the hour when Gavin Gunning pulled up with an injury. He shrugged his shoulders then picked up the ball before signal l ing to the bench that h i s ra c e was run.

The game was sl ip - ping away f rom Mixu’s men but Ky l e Knoyle fired in an effort that Fon Wi l - liams saved s up e r bl y w ith hi s feet.

A thi rd Caley Thist l e goa l looked more likely though and Vigurs saw a 25-yarder tipped over. No wonder that the boos rang round the

stadium at the end.
