Muguruza slams it to sad Serena

-

Garbine Muguruza sank to her knees in apparent disbelief after beating Serena Williams to clinch her first Grand Slam title.

The Spaniard beat the world number one 7-5, 6- 4 in the French Open final.

Muguruza said: “Since I was a little girl I have been watching the Williams sisters. Now I have beaten Serena in a Grand Slam final.”

Muguruza won 14 consecutive sets en route to the final after losing her opening set of the tournament.

Williams, who has been suffering from an adductor injury, broke down in tears on court after losing her second consecutive Slam final.

Fourth seed Muguruza, who lost to Williams in last year’s Wimbledon final, became the first Spaniard to lift the Suzanne Lenglen Cup since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario back in 1998.

A self-confessed anxious player, she managed her emotions by saving six of eight break points against Williams, who had lost only four of her 26 previous major singles finals.

Meanwhile, in the men’s wheelchair singles final Scotland’s Gordon Reid lost to Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez.

The 24-year-old was beaten 7-6, 7- 4, 6-1 and had been on track for a second Grand Slam singles title this year after his Australian Open victory.

Reid and Japan’s Shingo Kunieda later defended their doubles crown with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Michael Jeremiasz of France and Swede Stefan Olsson.
