Darren Well on mend

-

Darren Randolph feared he’d never get his Ireland career on track after a Euro 2012 snub while he was keeper at Motherwell.

But as he prepared for his tournament debut in France next weekend he declared: “Just look at me now!”

Four years ago Randolph was left out of the squad by boss Giovanni Trapattoni who didn’t even remember his name, referring to him only as ‘ keeper’.

He then faced a battle with veteran Shay Given, Keiren Westwood, David Forde and Rob Elliot to get his foot in the door.

Now the West Ham No.1 is in pole position to become just the third goal ie to represent Ireland at a major tournament, joining Given (2002, 2012) and Celtic legend Packie Bonner (1988, 1990, 1994) on the list.

Reflecting on his upset in 2012, Randolph said: “I was young in 2012 and you just never know how quickly things can change.

“I don’t think anyone would have seen where I was in that campaign to where I am now. I’m always nervous though!

“I’m just excited to go. I missed out in Poland so I’m just happy to be going.”

Randolph, 29, admits he’s done his homework on Swedish icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic who he’ll face a week on Monday.

He’s spent hours pouring over the striker’s 112 goals for his country on YouTube and social media.

Randolph said: “Most international strikers are capable of something special – but Ibrahimovic might have something extra. You’ve seen some of the goals he’s scored.

“But I’ ll play my usual game, I won’t worry too much – but he is definitely one to watch.”
