First title is a big lift for McGill
Anthony McGill scooped his maiden ranking title by beating Kyren Wilson in the Indian Open final yesterday.
The Glaswegian had previously finished as runner-up at the 2012 Scottish Open but finally broke into the winner’s enclosure by beating Englishman Wilson 5-2 in the Hyderabad showpiece.
A quarter-finalist at last year’s World Championship, the 25-year- old’s promise has now come to the fore, with the victory yielding his biggest- ever pay cheque of £50,000.
McGill, who now moves up to 18th in the world rankings, said: “I’m so proud to have won my first ranking event, it’s a huge feeling.
“It’s why you start out in snooker to win big tournaments like this and it feels great.”
McGil l also qual i f ies for November’s Champion of Champions following the victory.
After beating former world champion and triple crown winner Shaun Murphy 4-2 in the semis, McGill got off to the best possible start in the f inal by winning the opening frame.
Wilson had squared matters up at 2-2 by the mid- session interval but a smooth break of 96 put McGill back on the front foot.
He then won the next frame after Wilson had missed a red, sewing up victory by nervelessly sinking a tricky cut-back green, before clearing the colours.
