LABOUR CONTEST LEADER WARNS OF LEGAL CHALLENGE

- Mark Aitken Political Editor Corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn may go to court to challenge voting rule changes that, he claims, have stitched him up.

He is vowing to overturn the latest move to oust him as the escalating civil war threatens to destroy the party.

He said: “I’m very concerned. We haven’t heard the end of this.

“A lot of people joined the party in the last six months and wi l l be ext remely annoyed.

“They joined because they want to be involved in the party and they’re not being allowed to.

“There may be a legal move but nothing has been decided yet. Not by me anyway.”

Labour’s rul ing national executive imposed a backdated voting ban on members who action. He added: “If this decision is not overturned, it may well take a legal rul ing to end the disenfranchisement of our members.”

Today former shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Owen Smith wi l l launch his own campaign to become Labour leader in his Pont ypr idd constituency.

It was postponed on Friday out of respect after the Nice terrorist atrocity.

Tomorrow, he will fight it out with former shadow Business Secretary Angela Eagle at Commons hustings before Labour MPs.

As the only hope of beating Corbyn is if just one challenger stands, Smith is content for the contender with the fewest nominations to drop out. But Eagle opposes such a deal. A source c lose to her said: “She’s not going to stand down.”

Corbyn insisted his battle for survival is not stressing him out and brushed aside the leadership contest “as a little local difficulty which can be overcome.”
