THEY THINK IT’S COL OVER

A-LISTER WANTS TO STAR IN HOMELESS WORLD CUP MOVIE

- Graeme Donohoe

Colin Farrell hopes to star in a movie based on the Homeless World Cup. And he’s been picking the brains of the Scotland team manager for advice.

David Duke lifted the lid on the A-Lister’s plans as the smash-hit tournament in Glasgow came to an end yesterday.

He said: “Col in got involved in the Homeless World Cup when he narrated a documentary called Kicking It in 2008.

“It was about six teams and their journey to the cup in Cape Town. He bought into the values of it and became an ambassador for the tournament.

“Now there’s talk of a feature film with Colin as one of the players.

“I spent a bit of time with Colin at last year’s tournament in Amsterdam. I was giving him an insight into some of the journeys players go through and what the tournament’s like so he could get his head into it for the film. “He was brilliant with us – so down to earth. “I’ve seen the script and it’s very good but it’s not started filming yet. I think they’re looking for a director.”

Cup organisers have hailed the Glasgow tournament as one of their greatest ever. More than 100,000 fans i ncludi ng Fi rst Minister Nicola Sturgeon watched more than 500 homeless men and women from 52 nations on three pitches in George Square.

Founder Mel Young, who also set up the Big Issue in Scotland, said: “The response has been remarkable and all the players have said how much they’ve enjoyed being here. It’s been life-changing for some of them.”

The Cup aims to highlight the issue of homelessness as well as helping the players get back to more stable lives.

Graeme Brown of homelessness charity Shelter Scotland said: “It’s an exciting and engaging way of raising awareness.”

David, 36, knows better than most how the Cup transforms lives.

He was in despair before he was picked for the Scotland team at the 2004 tournament. But afterwards, he got his SFA coaching badges and set up the Street Soccer community project to help others get back on track.

Sir Alex Ferguson is a Street Soccer ambassador. And after rubbing shoulders with football royalty, David met actual royalty last week when he chatted to the Queen at a reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
