Dillon: We’ll take ear-bashing from Willo if it seals Premiership return

- Euan McArthur

Sean Dillon has warned Willo Flood will moan at his new Dundee United team-mates all day long – but they shouldn’t complain if it takes them back to the top-flight.

The defender is delighted to see his fellow Dubliner back on Tayside for a fourth stint after taking a hefty pay cut to join Ray McKinnon’s men from Aberdeen last week.

The 31-year- old former Celtic star’s return to Tannadice has whet the appetite of United fans who watched their side get the new season off to a winning start against Arbroath in their League Cup group opener at Gayfield on Friday night.

And skipper Dillon, the chief ear-basher up until now, has told the new faces in the dressing-room to brace themselves for heavy-duty stuff from Flood, who could face Cowdenbeath on Tuesday.

He said: “Some of the other lads have been asking what Willo’s like. So I’ve told them to be fair – if they think I moan a lot, wait until they hear Willo!

“Seriously, though, I won’t hide the fact I’m delighted to see him here. He just wants the best all the time. Willo and I have known each other since we were kids in Dublin. We’re good friends and we live in the same area just now.

“We’ve been on holiday together and our families get on very well.

“We’ll be travelling in to training each day, like we have done the four times he’s been at United, I’ll enjoy that.

“All that is great but what’s most important by a long way is that we’ve got a real quality player. “Willo will bring a lot to the dressing-room and the team. That’s what matters most.” United had Scott Fraser to thank for hitting the decisive penalty in the shoot-out win over the part-time Lichties, and Dillon reckons the new-look Tangerines are all geared up to push for a top-flight return. He said: “It’s been a shorter pre-season this season but it’s always good to get going. “The facilities we have at St Andrew’s are superb. The work has been concentrated and everyone is knuckling down, eager to play their part.”
